What is a PEMB?

PEMB stands for Pre-Engineered Metal Building. Pre-Engineered Metal Building systems are strong, versatile, and prefabricated, meaning they are manufactured at a factory and then shipped to the jobsite in pieces. Once a PEMB arrives on the jobsite, it is “erected” or “installed” by fitting the pieces together with clips, bolts, and connectors. It’s like a giant lego set for your construction project!

Are PEMBs and metal buildings the same thing?

Yes, they usually are the same thing. While there are several different kinds of metal building systems, PEMBs are the industry standard for commercial construction, large projects, and especially for buildings with wide “clear spans.” Sometimes PEMBs are just called “steel buildings,” “metal buildings,” or even “red iron buildings.”

Is a PEMB system right for my project?

Maybe, and maybe not. If you’re looking for something small (under 1,000 square feet) or cheaply made, you are probably NOT in the right place. PEMB systems are for serious, permanent construction projects. They INCLUDE costs like structural engineering, stamped permit drawings, and project management services that might be overkill if you are looking for a a carport or a garden shed. However, if you’re looking for long warranties, sound structural engineering, and wide clear spans without overhanging trusses or support columns, a PEMB is likely the best choice!

How much does a steel building cost?

Like anything else, it depends. Factors like local snow load, insulation, and accessories (doors, windows, etc.) will add to your project costs. On the other hand, choosing a simple design or purchasing a larger building will drive down your cost per square foot. Pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) can cost anywhere from $15 per square foot to $40 per square foot. What’s included with a Pre-Engineered Metal Building?

As the name suggests, structural engineering is always included with your metal building design and purchase. You’ll get structural permit drawings and blueprints “stamped” for your state. We recommend buying directly from manufacturers to get the best prices, so labor will typically NOT be included. Does it have to “look” like a metal building?

Not at all! The strength of a PEMB for your project is all about the “structural framing system” and the included structural engineering/stamped drawings. Structural steel is the strongest common building material out there today, so it’s easy to finish a steel building system with custom siding, roofing, facade work, etc. It’s easy to blend in with the neighborhood, meet zoning codes, or achieve a distinctive look while still benefiting from the advantages of a PEMB.
